i've been away

September 25, 2022

Well it's definitely been a minute. It's crazy how a quick break to focus on life can turn into months away from the smallweb. But I have been busy! Since my last post I've:

  • Finished college
  • Moved across the country to San Francisco
  • and started a new job
  • The whole process of moving and working killed my motivation to write or even attempt some hobby programming ideas. But now that I finally feel settled I'm happy to come back.

I picked up a new hobby: 35mm photography. I have an Olympus OM-1n from ~1979 that I found in perfect working order with a 28mm/f3.5 lens.

    some info on the OM-1

It is a fully manual camera, with the only electronics being in the dead simple light meter. I enjoy this more methodical approach to shooting. Nothing feels better than scoping a good picture, pulling smoothly on the film advance, and hearing the careful whirs and clicks of the clockwork mechanics inside as the shutter button is pressed.

Here are a few pictures from my first 2 rolls

On the recommendation of many friends (thanks Dunne[1]) I've started reading Dawn of Everything by Graeber and Wengrow. I'll probably end up writing about that too but it's a long one.

I might also try and dabble with generative music and livecoding, something I haven't touched since I was 16. At least it's a good excuse to work with SDL in Rust.
